ABOUT

Science is in trouble. But we can do something about it, starting at home. Escuela Verde, the UW Extension, Reflo and TransCenter for Youth invite you to create a one-of-a-kind science project to share with the community, a project that addresses a challenge we're all facing. SCIENCE STRIKES BACK is our way of making science great again with a fun event for lovers of fact-based learning of all ages.

The Team

  • TRANSCENTER FOR YOUTH

TransCenter for Youth (TCY) has 48 years of non-profit experience educating Milwaukee youth. Our mission is to operate small high schools that serve the unique needs of students in Milwaukee through innovative, culturally appropriate approaches to teaching and learning, serving as education models for other schools.

  • Escuela Verde

Escuela Verde cultivates a community that is participatory, just, sustainable, and peaceful. We live our vision through graduating reflective high school students prepared to live happy, healthy, meaningful lives; collaborating with the community to create a strong sense of place and skills to flourish without harm; providing staff who model our vision and embrace education as liberation; engaging urban youth by adhering to an ecopedagogical praxis; developing biliteracy and honoring linguistic and cultural identities by engaging in translanguaging practices; and offering immersion opportunities for those interested in transformative education.

  • University of Wisconsin-Extension

University of Wisconsin-Extension and Dr. Justin Hougham have collaborated on Science Strikes Back every year in support of the development of scholarship and research in education in the urban context, expanding access for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Environmental Science Education and the MKE Green STEM project. Locally through Milwaukee County Extension, we work closely to teach, learn, lead and serve, connecting people with the University of Wisconsin, and engaging with them in transforming lives and communities.

  • REFLO

As a nonprofit organization, Reflo’s mission is to catalyze sustainable water use, green infrastructure, and equitable water resource management that support triple-bottom-line outcomes that are grounded in strong partner relationships. We will accomplish our objectives through education, research, and the implementation of water projects that are valuable for individuals, local communities, and the organizations that support them.

Science Strikes Back is Milwaukee's community based science fair.

Since 2017, we have been collaborating with community members in Milwaukee to critically analyze environmental issues and solve problems in our communities.
